Pope Francis and President Trump finally convened for 30 minutes in the Vatican on Wednesday, discussing topics such as immigration and the Manchester bombing attack in the U.K. Upon meeting each other despite contentious relations, Trump and the pope shook hands and the President said, “Thank you so much.”

According to the New York Times, several matters were discussed, including issues that both leaders disagree on, including immigration, climate change, and arms deals, but they also discussed issues of crucial importance that both could shake hands over: abortion, religious freedom, and the promotion of peace. In other words, matters of faith and morals.

Trump was joined by First Lady Melania, daughter Ivanka, her husband Jared Kushner and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Trump told the pope it was “a very great honor” after shaking hands. The two were led into the pope’s private study and were seated across from one another.

However, U.S. reporters and other media constituents were exiled from the private room, as the two world leaders talked for about 30 minutes. They left the meeting and shook hands. Pope Francis went on to attend his Wednesday address in the Vatican as Trump and his family took a tour of the Sistine Chapel.

Both Trump and Francis condemned Monday night’s deadly terror attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. They reportedly discussed the topic of eradicating religiously inspired violence and demanding Muslim leaders take a greater stand in rooting out radicalism from their places of worship.

The pope expressed “heartfelt solidarity with all those affected by this senseless act of violence,” especially the “children and young people” who died. He made did point fingers at any particular party responsible, despite ISIS laying claim to the attack.
